A birth chart, or natal chart, is a snapshot of the sky at the time and place you were born: a map of which planet was in which sign and which “house.” It looks complicated, but once you understand a few basic ideas you can begin to read your own.
To calculate your chart you need your birth date, your birth time if possible, and your birth place. The time matters especially for the rising sign and house placements.
Sun, Moon, and rising: the triple identity
Sun sign: your best-known sign, representing your core identity and life purpose. It is the answer you give when asked “what is your sign?”
Moon sign: the sign the Moon was in when you were born. It represents your emotional world, your instincts, and what you need in order to feel safe.
Rising sign: the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It represents how you appear to the outside world, your first impression, and your approach to life. It is the component most sensitive to birth time.
What the houses mean
The chart is divided into twelve houses, and each represents a different area of life: the 1st house is identity, the 2nd is money and values, the 7th is relationships, the 10th is career, and so on. The house a planet sits in tells you in which area of life that planet’s energy shows up most.
House systems also differ from site to site (Placidus, Whole Sign, and others), which is one reason different sites can say different things.
Where to start
The first step is learning your Sun, Moon, and rising signs. Together they paint a far richer and more realistic picture of a personality than a single sign. After that, look at which house each planet sits in to discover which areas of life stand out.
You can use our birth chart calculator to see this trio for free. You only need to enter your birth date, your birth time if you know it, and your birth city.
If you do not know your birth time
Your Sun and Moon signs can be worked out from your birth date alone, though for the Moon the approximate time of day can matter. The rising sign and house placements depend directly on birth time. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so even a few minutes can change the result.
Not knowing your birth time does not mean you are out of luck: try a birth certificate, hospital records, or older relatives. If none of these is possible, a general chart can be drawn assuming noon, but the rising sign and houses must then be treated as approximate.
What the other planets say
Beyond Sun, Moon, and rising: Mercury shows how you think and communicate, Venus what you find beautiful and how you love, and Mars how you take action and what you struggle with. These planets make your chart three-dimensional, with a depth you cannot get from your Sun sign alone.
In short
A birth chart is a map of personality too rich to reduce to a single sign. Learning your Sun, Moon, and rising trio is the soundest first step in reading it. If you know your birth time you can read the whole chart; if not, even your Sun and Moon signs offer a solid place to begin.
